Yangshuo is a traveller's paradise when it comes to food. There are many restaurants serving both Chinese and western dishes.
Breakfast - The breakfast of choice for most locals is Guilin Mifen or Guilin rice noodles. Many small restaurants sell these all over Yangshuo. The noodles come with meat and some sauce and then there are extra vegetables and chili that you can add on. They sell them in different portion sizes. An 'erliang' portion is a filling and costs 2.5 Yuan. To order it just say "Guilin mifen- erliang"
Dinner- The real local food now is the Yangshuo beer fish. Basically it is a whole fish that is fried and cooked in beer. The fish is whole, so it comes with all its scales and bones. It is all a spicy dish. Some restaurants give you the option of a fish with less bones.
Yangshuo does have many restaurants, but only a few try really hard to do things right. The following ones are the places that we have found to have pride in their dishes and service

Cafe ChinaGreat food, coffee and Cheesecakes. Has great views from it's rooftop and a chill out room on the 2nd floor |

Buffalo BarThis place has it all. Really good food, great range, and quality Australian wines. 2nd floor eating area is great to get away from the crowds on the street below Free Internet and wireless Internet |

DriftersAn old favorite of many travellers. Great shepherd's pie and apple crumbles |

Pure Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant This is an excellent vegetarian restaurant located at the Magnolia Hotel |
Cloud 9This the place to go to for excellent Chinese food. Mainly Sichuan style |
Karst CafeProbably the best pizza's in town and a nice friendly atmosphere makes this cafe really nice |

7th HeavenAnother old favorite but now with a building and new location. The food is still very good |
Rock and GrillBrand new restaurant with more upmarket service but with very fair prices. The food is very good |
Get out into the countryside where the views are great and its nice and quiet. The Li River Retreat was voted the best restaurant in Yangshuo by chinaexpat.com
We have sampled many dishes in many restaurants and this is a list of our preferred dishes in each place. Please note that this is only a guide and your own taste may differ from ours.
Breakfast
For Chinese breakfasts you will have a great experience and great value in the local stalls. Try the Guilin Mifen. Cheap and filling
For western breakfasts, many cafes have set menus with American, Continental and other choices. The best ones are definately at Karst Cafe and Buffalo Bar
Lunch and Dinner
For Chinese dishes, try out Cloud 9 for their Sichuan style dishes, Cafe China for a good range of dishes and Drifters for some excellent Chinese fare
For Western Dishes you have a great range of food
Steaks - The Aussie run Buffalo Bar does amazing steaks using both local beaf or imported New Zealand sirloins
Pizzas- There are several wood fired ovens in town but we still prefer the great pizzas from Karst cafe
Pasta dishes - Drifters do very well here but the Buffalo Bar has the best spaghetti carbonara in town
Mexican Food - Check out Red Star or M.C. Blues. Awesome burritos
Shepherd's pies- Drifters and Cafe China, way ahead of the rest
