Hikes around Yangshuo

There are some excellent hikes around Yangshuo. You can head out of town in almost any direction, and will find that there are bridges and ferries to get you across the various rivers at most of the suitable points.

There are (currently) no great maps of the area - but then it is almost impossible to get lost, so don't worry. Use the rivers and main roads as boundaries to keep you orientated.

Take protection against the sun and rain, plenty of water, snacks and some money - along with your camera or sketchbook to record what you see.

Although cycling around Yangshuo allows you to go further in the same amount of time, do not make the mistake of thinking that you will necessarily see more. The slower pace of hiking allows you to see more of the detail as you pass by, and to share your thoughts and insights with your colleagues. This means that hiking is a far more social activity, and therefore one that complements biking trips even if you go in similar directions.

A local guide can add to your experience and you should consider taking one if you really want to learn about the things that you see. If you are part of a small group, then this does not work out very expensive.

You do not have to walk out and back. Many great hikes can be completed with a public bus or boat trip back to Yangshuo town.

Where to hike

Yangdi to Xingping

This is Yangshuo's most popular hike as you follow the Li River through its most stunning section and at the same time getting to see the small villages along the way that you do not see on a Li River cruise

This hike is easy to do on your own. Just take a local bus from Yangshuo's bus station to Yangdi (8 Yuan). On arrival in Yangdi it is very obvious where to buy your hike/ferry ticket (16 Yuan). This ticket allows you to walk in the region and it also includes the 3 river crossings on small ferries that you need to make. The path is fairly obvious, but if you are not sure, just ask the locals the way to Xingping

The actual hike should take you anything from 4 to 6 hours. There are shops along the way for drinks and there are also some local restaurants

On arrrival in Xingping, you can walk around the old part of town, go to the spot where they took the photo for the back of the 20 Yuan banknote or even visit the local market. Market days are any day of the month that end in 3,6 or 9

To get back to Yangshuo, just take a local bus back (5.5 Yuan)

There are many hikes around Yangshuo but between Alf and I there is only one Hike; the one we accidentally discovered the day the pedal fell off his new and very expensive mountain bike.

The same two ladies that chose the bike ride from Guilin to Xingping (my previous article) became our first customers to take the challenge and - since I have become more familiar with the twists, turns and climbs - I became guide for the day.
