Yangshuo Flood 2009

6th of July

Well, its all over. The water levels are almost back to normal and life goes on here in Yangshuo.

The Li River cruises are operating again.

This morning we woke up to blue skies. It has become cloudy again, but it looks like the rains have gone

5th Of July

This is an update on the morning of the 5th of July

Well, the water levels have come down about 3 meters and there are no more issues

The staff at Bar 98 are cleaning up this morning and the 99 Supermarket is open as normal

The higher water levels were caused by the opening of the flood gates of the reservoir to the North of Guilin. These are now closed and we do not expect any more problems in the future

Yangshuo is currently (4th July 2009) experiencing a very minor flood. The Li River has come up due to heavy rains to the north of Guilin. Yangshuo has had steady rain but not in heavy quantities

The Li River has NOT burst its banks in Yangshuo. The water coming down the smaller creeks feeding into the Li River is not fully draining into the Li River so some of it has gone onto streets and into some shops

What is affected

Yangshuo's lowest lying areas are next to these small creeks, places like Bar 98 and The Balcony have water in them. Its only about a foot under which means that it will be easy to clean out once the water recedes

The Li River cruises have been stopped and the Liu Sanjie light show has been cancelled for a few days

Bamboo raft trips on both the Li River and Yulong river have been cancelled today

What is not affected

Most of Yangshuo is still functioning normally. Electricity is still on. Water supply is ok even if it may become a bit murky but we do have a new water processing plant which has been working well since it began operating last year

Most hotels, restaurants are open for business with no shortages

Bike rides into the countryside are still possible and in my opinion, very special as there is a lot of mist floating through the mountains and all the rice paddies are a vibrant green

Flood Duration

We have been informed that the flood waters will start to come down by early afternoon, so by tomorrow (5th July 2009) everything will be back to normal

I will update this page if anything new and major comes up. At the moment we do not expect the water to rise too much more as there is no rain at the moment

Highlights Of Today

99 Supermarket

Last year, Yangshuo had a much larger flood and the worst affected business was the underground supermarket (99 supermarket). By the time time the water came in, no stock had been removed which meant that most of it had to be thrown away. Luckily for them, their insurance company came to the rescue

This year they are well prepared with water pumps and sand bags already in place

Bar 98

We were there last night talking to the owner, Tim. He was resigned to the fact that there was nothing he could do about it. We just had a beer and a laugh

The Li River Retreat

I was there in the morning and got some great photos. Being perched high above the Li River means that the Retreat is dry, but you have great vantage point to see the Li River and Yangshuo in the distance
