City Highlights

Today we will stay within the city and visit some of the more famous sites in Guilin as well as some less well ones that we know you will enjoy. We are happy to vary the list of sites, within reason, but the following gives an indication of how your day could look.

Our first stop is Elephant Trunk Hill, a symbol for tourism in Guilin. After taking the oligatory photos we continue upriver to Fubo Hill which also overlooks the river.

For a local experience we recommend a bowl of Guilin Rice Noodles for lunch. Tasty and filling these are the snack of choice for many residents.

After lunch we head out to the Masion of the Prince of Jingjiang. The Mansion is rated as the finest example of a Vassal-state Prince

Day 3: Guilin

Beyond Guilin

Today we head north out of Guilin to the Ling Canal, an ancient waterway that has connected the Pearl River and Ynagtse River systems since the times of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor and better known for his other constructions: the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Warriors.

We have included a relaxing boat trip down the canal which then allows us to visit the delighful town of Xingan. Many of the businesses are located on the sides of the canal making for an interesting stroll.

Later we will head off to other nearby sites of interest including another section of the canal and a village with many Ming Dynasty buildings.

The Ling Canal

The Ling Canal was built on the orders of the first Emperor of China so as to connect the water systems of the Yangtse River and Pearl River in order to transport men and supplies. This allowed his troops to pacify the southern states and thereby contune the unification of China. Amazingly the canal still functions as designed, though it is now  a tourist attraction and not a trade route.

Yangshuo and the Rice Terraces

We had a terrific time visiting the Yangshuo area with the help and guidance of Yangers. We are so very grateful for all the effort that went into looking after us and making sure we got to experience to the fullest all that we wanted to do.

We had mentioned prior to our arrival of our desire to experience the local cusine --tasty local dishes. I don't think we had anything western the whole time we were there; it was just what we wanted. (We're convinced, however, that if all we had wanted was western food then our guide would have made sure we had only western.) Yangers went out of its way to tailor make our visit to our desires.
